  • That Milan has a green thumb is not just an effective promotional slogan: for the Milanese and the many tourists who frequent the city, the presence of greenery is a widespread, well-groomed and above all highly appreciated component of the urban reality. In this book there are more than 40 main public green areas and a hundred 'minor' ones, described by greenie journalist Carla Chelo and illustrated by photographer Lorenzo De Simone, who scoured them inch by inch. Dozens of enchanting and sometimes unexpected places in nature, classified as historic parks, 20th-century gardens and contemporary gardens, grouped into the nine Town Halls of the city. To the first category belong, for example, the park of Villa Reale (the only park forbidden to adults not accompanied by a child), or the Brera botanical garden, which boasts the oldest pair of ginkgo biloba in the city; to the second, immense parks such as the San Siro racecourse or the North park; in the third, young gardens such as CityLife and the Biblioteca degli Alberi. Parks are almost always accompanied by buildings of architectural importance, such as the eighteenth-century Palazzo Dugnani in the Indro Montanelli Public Gardens, or rural buildings such as the Merlata farmhouse in the homonymous park. This book, with elegant graphics and fascinating illustrations, should be used as a guide: in fact, public transport is indicated to reach them, the service facilities (areas for dogs, fountains, bars, sports facilities, children's play areas), the prevalent botanical species. Because living in the green - it is now scientifically proven - produces well-being.
